Mr. Nyunt Wai is currently working as a Senior Scientist at Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERI@N). His focus at ERI@N is R&D on energy storage battery, specialized in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery. 

Mr. Wai received M.Sc in Chemical Engineering from National University of Singapore and M.Eng. in Energy Technology from Asian Institute of Technology. His first degrees are B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering from Rangoon Institute of Technology and B.Sc. in Industrial Chemistry from Rangoon Arts and Science University. He was a member of Electrochemical Society Inc., USA from 1997 to 2007. He is an author/co-author in several papers and patents.

Prior joining to ERI@N, he had over 25 years of Engineering and R&D experience in chemical engineering, water and wastewater treatment, water reclamation, solar energy and energy storage field. When he worked in Environmental Technology Institute, Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering, and Singapore Utilities International (a subsidiary of Public Utility Board (PUB)) in Singapore, he had designed and constructed several pilot plants and tested newly developed and noble technologies on site. At PUB, he was involved in design and construction of a Membrane Bioreactor plant (5 MGD capacity), superintending the project from scratch to commissioning.  

In his 5 years R&D project in Thailand, with license and collaboration from University of New South Wales, Australia, he developed a prototype Vanadium Redox Flow Battery, designed and built energy efficient demonstration solar house with solar thermal and photovoltaic panels on roof-top and the prototype battery system in garage. The technology was then further developed and applied in a solar farm project.

  • Novel high energy density Vanadium Redox Flow Battery for renewable energy storage

  • Integration of the Vanadium Redox Flow Battery with the cargo handling equipment for reducing the diesel consumption and CO2 emission

  • Installation, integration and long-term performance testing of large scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery energy storage system into building grid and solar PV system

  • Research collaboration projects with industry partners on R&D of carbon based electrode materials, electrolyte stability and stack design for application in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

  • Treatment of wastewater from scrubber system for SOx and NOx removal from flue gas on shipboard


Research Interests

  • R&D on large scale energy storage battery, specifically on Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

  • System level application research on integration of battery into solar PV system and building grid

  • Water and wastewater treatment and water reclamation portions in energy research projects
