Development of PEMFC Bipolar Plates using Carbon Materials from Methane Cracking: RCA signing with Shanxi Zhongxing Environment and Energy Technology Co., Ltd.

A research collaboration agreement has been signed between Energy Research Institute at NTU (ERI@N) and Shanxi Zhongxing Environment and Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (ZXCE) on the topic of methane cracking and the carbon material utilization. Prof. Subodh Mhaisalkar, Associate Vice President of NTU, and Mr Zhu Weizhong, CEO of ZXCE, were at the signing of agreement.

The methane cracking is an emerging pre-combustion decarbonisation technology.  In the pyrolysis process, natural gas is cracked into hydrogen gas and solid carbon. Despite encountering challenges in methane cracking, in particular, the catalyst fouling issue pertaining to carbon deposition in the reactor, the team is confident to produce high purity hydrogen for PEMFC application and the byproduct graphite powder can be used to make bipolar plates for PEMFC, thus demonstrating the circular economy concept.
